(1792-1881) Born in Ireland, his family came to the United States in 1799. He served in the 2nd Pennsylvania Militia during the War of 1812, rising from the rank of captain to colonel. He then joined the U.S. Army and served in the Quartermaster Department. At the outbreak of the Mexican War, he was commissioned major general of volunteers. He commanded the 2nd Division, Army of Occupation, during the Tampico Expedition, saw action during the Siege of Vera Cruz, and was wounded at the Battle of Cerro Gordo. He led the pursuit of the Mexican Army and was the first to enter Jalapa. After the war he acquired 30 cotton mills and became quite wealthy. He was also very influential in Philadelphia politics. When the Civil War began, he was commissioned major general of volunteers and appointed commander of the Department of Pennsylvania, and the Army of the Shenandoah. In 1861, Patterson, operating under vague orders from General in Chief, Winfield Scott to capture Harpers Ferry, failed to act immediately, and was outmaneuvered at the Battle of Hoke's Run. This allowed the Confederate army at Winchester, commanded by General Joseph E. Johnston, to march unmolested to 1st Manassas, arriving in time to reinforce General Beauregard and turn the tide of the battle into a Confederate victory. Patterson was widely criticized for his failure to contain the Rebel forces, and he saw no further service during the war. His son was Union General Francis E. Patterson, and his son in law was Union General J.J. Abercrombie. Wet plate, albumen carte de visite photograph, mounted to 2 5/16 x 3 7/8 card. Bust view in uniform with epaulettes. Backmark: E. Anthony, New York. Card is very slightly trimmed. Light age toning. Very fine. Uncommon.
Card signature as Past Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of Mississippi with place and date (1834-1917) Born in Charleston, S.C., he graduated from West Point in 1857, and served under Colonel Albert Sidney Johnston, during the Utah expedition, 1857-58, and at Fort Walla Walla, Washington Territory, 1859-60. When Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, he resigned his U.S. Army commission and returned home to Charleston. In March 1861, he was commissioned captain in the Provisional Confederate Army, and aide-de-camp to General P.G.T. Beauregard. He was one of those who received the formal surrender of Major Robert Anderson at Fort Sumter, and raised the first Confederate flag, and posted the first guards at Fort Sumter. He was then sent to the Confederate capital, at Montgomery, Ala., to present to the Confederate Congress, the first Confederate flag that had been struck by enemy fire during the battle for Fort Sumter. Still serving on General Beauregard's staff at the start of the battle of Shiloh, he was given command of a brigade. He also commanded this brigade in the Vicksburg campaign where he helped to stop the attacks of General William T. Sherman, and Admiral David D. Porter. He was promoted to brigadier general to rank from July 23, 1863. During Sherman's March to the Sea, his cavalry force harassed the flanks of the Union army. When within a few miles of Savannah, he left his horses on the South Carolina side of the river, and after swimming it, entered Savannah with his men as infantry, covering the rear of General Hardee's army during their evacuation of the city. He escorted the fleeing Confederate President Jefferson Davis from Charlotte into Georgia where his command was disbanded. After the war Ferguson settled in Greenville, Mississippi, where he studied law, and was admitted to the bar. He served as president of the board of the Mississippi levee commissioners for several years, and in 1885 was appointed by President Chester Arthur to the Mississippi River Commission. Card Signature With Place and Date : 3 1/4 x 2, in ink, Samuel Wragg Ferguson, P.[ast] G.[rand] C.[ommander], Grand Commandery of Mississippi, Biloxi, May 11, 1915. Very fine.
The first martyr of the Civil War! (1837-1861) He was famous before the Civil War for organizing the Chicago Zouaves and staging spectacular drill exhibitions throughout the country. In August 1860, he performed on the lawn of the White House. He later accompanied President elect Abraham Lincoln to Washington for the inauguration, having become very close to the Lincoln family. He raised the Fire Zouaves, the 11th New York Vols., and led them into Washington in May 1861. He was shot down and killed by James T. Jackson, the proprietor of the Marshall House Hotel in Alexandria, Va., on May 24, 1861, after having removed a Confederate flag from the roof of that building. It was claimed to have been seen from the White House and Ellsworth found it to be an insult to President Lincoln. Jackson was immediately killed by Private Francis E. Brownell. A correspondent of the New York Tribune was on the scene, and the episode caused an immediate sensation which contributed greatly to the war sentiment in the North. Wet plate, albumen carte de visite photograph, mounted to 2 3/8 x 4 card. Full standing view in uniform posed with his arms folded across his chest with cannon at left foreground. Backmark: Published by D. Appleton & Co. from negative by J. Gurney & Son. A few tiny surface pin pricks in bottom of the mount. Very fine.
