Type: Jewelry, Vintage Manufacturer: Vintage, handcrafted This early, hand-carved shell cameo most likely dates from the late 1800s or early 1900s, based on construction and design. The two-color shell cameo depits a woman with a roman nose wearing a laurel wreath in her hair, as well as some kind of headdress. The carving is very good quality and the touches of darker color in her heair and on her softly draped bodice show the expertise of this carver. The cameo is bezel set into a twisted rope setting, probably brass, and has the old style pin stem and C clasp. Thepin extends beyond the brooch itself--a characteristic of early brooches. There is some slight irregularity on the right side of the bezel, but it is intact and doesn't detract from this wonderful cameo brooch. The cameo measures 1 7/16 x 1 3/4" and the entire piece is 1 3/4 x 2 x 3/8" deep and is in excellent original condition, other than the detail mentioned.
