Extremely fine carving brings out the details of this lovely Bacchante figure: the grapes and leaves gently draped in her hair, her exquisite profile and the curls of her hair. Bacchantes were the female followers of the god Bacchus--the Roman god of wine and fertility. This fine shell cameo is prong set, both front and back, into a delicate gold frame with lighly etched designs which complements the cameo beautifully.
The shell cameo of a Bacchante is in excellent, original condition with no flaws or defects. It has a secure safety clasp in is fairly large for a cameo, measuring 1 1/4 x 1 1/2 inches. There is also a ring for hanging on a chain so the cameo can be worn as a necklace. |
