Lovely and unusual hand-carved shell cameo pin in a diamond-shape setting in three goldtone colors : yellow, rose and white goldtone or silver in unmarked metal. The shell cameo is very finely carved and shows a woman with grape leaves in her hair, characteristic of representations of Bacchantes, followers of Bacchus, god of wine among other things. The setting is quite interesting with the border formed of bars of yellow goldtone alternating with rose goldtone flowers. There is an oval engraved goldtone section attached to the goldtone bezel setting for the cameo. The bezel has applied leaves in rose and silver for a stunning overall affect. This Victorian cameo is in excellent, original condition with a simple 'C' clasp. It has a loop on the bottom, possibly for attaching a locket. The cameo has what appears to be an initial and the Roman numerals XVI on the back, probably the artists mark. Measurements are 1 5/8 x 1 3/4 inches. An unusual and stunning piece. |
