Magazine; The Ladies' Magazine, Sarah Hale, ed, March 1830. Before taking over as editor of Godey's in 1837, Sarah J. Hale was editor of The Ladies' Magazine from its inception in 1828. This early, militant, feminist, besides her editing duties was also a noted author, poet, (Mary Had a Little Lamb) and campaigner for educational opportunities for women. She worked for the recognition of female writers and introduced the then unknown Harriet Beecher Stowe.
Sarah J. Hale was also the main advocate of the National Thanksgiving Holiday which President Lincoln proclaimed in 1864. The Ladies Magazine, approximately 6" x 10" in size and serious in layout and content, was published by Putnam & Hunt in Boston and featured original poetry, literary notices, and articles of interest to women, plus advertising. We consider this to be a very rare and important piece of America's history. The issue of March 1830 features articles such as; The Four Portraits, the Women of America, and a Dutch legend. Also included; An essay on positive reasons for reading "romances," original poetry, and literary reviews. The condition is surprisingly good for a 170 year old publication. Some small tears, foxing, and folds, but complete. There is a large tear on the cover, but no loss of paper |
